For years I wondered why some people enter the network marketing profession and, over time, make millions of dollars (even millions of dollars per year) while others appear to work at it for years and barely make a dime.
The worst kind of promoters of the industry, the real kings of hype, would have us all believe that it's all just easy -- just get three, then they will get three, etc., etc., and within months, you would have tens of thousands of people working for you, earning money for you, almost effortlessly. Of course, it never works that way.
But the best of the leaders, the rare ones that also achieved the highest incomes did have something going for them. I wanted to know what that was. Was it the company that they joined? Did it have some rare product or compensation plan that made them so successful? No. Clearly there were high earners in many, many companies, even some that were totally unimpressive.
Was it their prior level of success that determined whether they would do well in their chosen MLM company? Sometimes that helped, for sure, but I have certainly seen very successful people accomplish very little while others, who would otherwise have been considered very average, even below average, became hugely successful in their network marketing businesses.
Maybe the secret was that the top dogs were extreme extroverts? No, it seems at least a small percentage actually seemed to be the opposite of that and still found a way to succeed. Was it brains? Good looks? A glib tongue? They got in very early? They know all the right people? Great education? No. I realized for every success I thought of that had one or more of those seeming advantages, there were plenty of others who did not.
Perhaps, it was their level of desire? No question I had heard my share of motivational talks about the impelling power of a strong "why" and I sure couldn't think of anyone that had made it big without powerful internal motivation of some kind. Yes, that certainly must be at least part of the equation.
Interestingly, two different top earners that I know personally are extremely dyslexic. Wow. Did that work in their favor somehow? Now I was really stretching.
For over ten years I had those kinds of questions rattling around in my head. And every time I got to know another "heavy hitter," I watched to discover their "secrets."
Of course, and this may be obvious to anyone that thinks about it, it is never just one thing that tricks the deal. It's a combination of factors.
Admittedly, sometimes I get a little obsessive about my desire to understand things very clearly. And I love definitions and formulas, anything that will help me understand something with greater clarity.
I don't know exactly why or how ideas pop into our heads. (And it's always when we are doing something else, you know, like taking a shower or doing some mundane household chore.)
On this particular day a few months ago, while I was just driving home from the gym, the answer to this network marketing success puzzle just came to me, almost complete, in the way of an actual formula.
I call it "The Network Marketing Effectiveness Formula" and it explains every big success that I have studied in the MLM profession. Here are the factors that multiply together in the formula:
Offer credibility x Personal Credibility x Personal Likability x Exposure = Your Effectiveness Score
No longer is huge MLM success a mystery! Nor is it too obscure to be unobtainable. The formula actually brings crystal clarity to what it takes to reach the highest levels of success.
The insights got even more interesting when I interviewed one million-dollar-per-year earner, who reached that unusually high level of success in less than six years from newbie to guru, when he scored himself using the formula. It revealed that he still had lots of work to do in the area of "Personal Likability." He also needed to improve in "Offer Credibility."
The beauty of knowing the formula is that once you understand it, it's easy to make adjustments in any of the factors to increase, even dramatically, your own income level - the mystery is gone!
And, perhaps equally as important, the hype that caused much of the poor reputation that MLM wears like scarlet letters gets erased with the accurate understanding of how success and failure in the profession are produced.
